– Val Di Mello –
Val di Mello takes its name from the homonymous village of Mello. In January 2009, the Lombardy Region recognized the Val di Mello as a nature reserve, thus becoming the largest protected area in Lombardy.
The reserve consists of two areas: an “integral” reserve and a “special area”.
The integral reserve extends on the orographic left and access is only possible for authorized forestry personnel. On the orographic right, the special protected area extends, which also includes small inhabited rural sites and the adjacent valleys, such as the Val del Ferro. It is possible to enter in the special area with your car only at certain times of the year. During the summer it is required to leave the car in the municipality of San Martino (the highest town in Val Masino, located at the entrance to Val di Mello). Although the path that runs from San Martino to the valley floor is practically flat and within everyone’s reach, there is still a shuttle bus service that allows you to reach the end of the carriage road that enters the nature reserve.
However, within the special reserve there are some tourist accommodation and catering activities, which however must comply with the sustainable tourism policies established by various municipal and provincial resolutions.
